Sireh Junjung

What it is:

A traditional betel leaf arrangement (sireh = betel leaf, junjung = arranged upright).

Usually presented in a tiered and upright form, often decorated with flowers, gold/silver ribbons, and other embellishments.

Purpose:

Used as part of the hantaran (gift exchange between bride and groom).

A symbol of respect, tradition, and blessing — it reflects purity and the sanctity of marriage.

Symbolism:

Represents humility, sincerity, and readiness for the marital union.

The betel leaves signify good fortune, fertility, and respect for elders.

Sireh Dara

What it is:

A decorative arrangement of betel leaves, usually carried or held by the bride or her bridesmaids.

“Dara” means virgin/maiden, so this is typically associated with the bride or young women.

Purpose:

Part of pre-wedding rituals or to accompany the bride during the bersanding (wedding ceremony).

Sometimes it’s also placed at the bridal dais (pelamin) or used in photography.

Symbolism:

Represents the purity, modesty, and femininity of the bride.

It’s a celebration of her maidenhood and transformation into a wife.
